After serving as joint heads of Screen, Audio and Digital Innovation at LAMDA Michelle Bonnard and Amy Cudden set up The Screen Room - London, a space for actors to continue developing their craft.
At the heart of The Screen Room’s work work is a belief that professional actors need opportunities to keep exploring, taking risks and developing their artistry. The Screen Room brings together professional training, practical industry knowledge and a supportive creative community, helping actors deepen their craft, build confidence and create their best work for screen.

This practical two-day intensive is designed to help professional actors reconnect with their screen craft, confidence and creativity. Through scene work and a deep dive into character and story, we’ll focus on the process that leads to compelling screen performances. We will explore the unique demands of screen-work, the relationship between the actor and the camera, and how to bring yourself authentically to the work. Throughout the workshop we will draw on professional on-set practices and you will gain a deeper understanding of how you can make bold, exciting and technically fluent offers.
While participants work towards creating a self-tape, the workshop is not about the tape itself. It’s about how we get there.
DAY ONE: Analysis into Practice ● What makes screen performances compelling and affecting ● Reflect on how your own taste, instincts and authenticity shape your work ● Put ideas into action through paired exercises and experimentation ● Discover how different choices translate on screen through observation and focused feedback
DAY TWO: Practice into Action ● Integrate instinct with craft through practical work ● Apply the tools and insights from the workshop to create your own self-tape ● Discussion on how to carry the workshop's ideas into your ongoing creative practice ● Leave with a strong self-tape, and renewed joy in screen work, and confidence in your process.

SCREEN ACTING: SELF DIRECTION
Self taping shouldn't just be a high stakes swing at a moving target. It should be a joyful creative practice in and of itself. With Screen Acting - Self Direction we'll approach taping from a 360 degree perspective, offering insight into the storytelling beats a writer and director wants, alongside the beats that you intuitively feel as the actor, and we'll do this with a small group of professional actors over four consecutive weeks.

THE COURSE:
Inside-out - the actor's way: building on your existing process - specific, imaginative character preparation that starts with who they are, what they want, what's in their way. The non-negotiables in a deep dive.
Outside-in - the writer & director's way: as writers and directors, we'll bring that perspective with sessions on scene structure, what a director might hope to see in a tape, and the function of your character to the overall story. An insight from the other side of the lens.
Your relationship with the camera: every genre asks something different of you - a private, withheld performance, a direct realism, or an intimacy with your inner-most thoughts. A variety of scripts, genres and formats will acclimate you to the flexibility of relationship you need to have with the camera.
Screen Acting - Self Direction will refresh your relationship with your taping process, and give you a toolkit to continue elevating it... so you can start enjoying your tapes again.
